Witches Rule The Tube!

Among the new series debuting this fall, there has been an explosion in the number of series in which the plot lines are about witches. Being that this is October and the Halloween season, the number of the witchcraft series might have some baring of the television’s networks choice to air such programming.

The series on most interest are:

Lifetime’s Witches of East End, which is about three young witches who are just discovering their powers and must break a curse that leaves them dead before they turn thirty and their mother (a witch) pregnant with them again almost before their graves are cold. With the unnatural nature of the curse, and the knowledge of how to break it apparently unknown to the witches, it has last repeated itself for centuries. Episode: 1, Pilot, which aired on October 6, 2013, opened strong. Even though one is tempted to think of Charmed the former CW series about three witches, the similarities ends there. Although, Witches of East End (based on the novel by author Melissa de la Cruz) is new there is already questions about whether the budding series will last. To this only time will be the judge.

Nest up is, the FX series American Horror Story:  Coven. Once again, we see some familiar faces as
well as some new familiar faces in AHS: Coven.. The older witches have roots dating back to the Salem's Witch era.The most notable new cast members for this latest installment of the series is Angela Basset whose supernatural create extends to  Innocent Blood , Vampire in Brooklyn ,and Strange Days. Then there is Kathy Bates, who made her mark as a horror siren in the hit movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, Misery.

In true American Horror Story style, the eerie level in the Coven is traumatically high. The plot centers on a group of young witches attending a finishing school in New Orleans created just for giving witches a place to perfect their magic safely. Although, the young witches are taught to use their magic with caution, all bet are off after the Supreme witch, Fiona Goode (boy what an oxymoron of a last name) played by Jessica Lange, comes and attempts to train the women in dark magic.

Already the young witches are creating their own Frankenstein-like monster that is the love interest of one of them. While this is happening, Fiona has dug up and enslaved Delphine LaLaurie (Bates), who was cursed to live forever by the Voodoo priestess, Marie Laveau (Basset), whom loved Delphine tortured and drained of blood in her quest for extended eternal youth.

With the ensuing war between witches and voodoo boiling in the cauldron, FX series American Horror Story:  Coven is a good bet as a show to watch.

Finally, there are the witches in the long run CW series The Vampire Diaries and its new series The Originals. In the former, bonnie is now a dead witch with very little power. However, I predict that this powerless will change as her family and friends of put into more danger by Silas, who has S Stefan as a doppelganger. Then there are the witches of The Originals, Sophie Deveraux, played by Daniella Pineda and Davina, played by Danielle Campbell, will be the most influential witches in the battle for power between Klaus and Marcel. However, Davina appears to be the strongest at this time.

Overall, witches on television have found their home, and each series is promising of good entertainment.
